Knee Pain

What is Knee Pain?

The knee is a hinge joint that is a common area for developing pain and experiencing an injury. Knee pain can be used from daily activities or high intensity sport and can affect all age groups. It can develop as a result of overuse, acute trauma or gradually over a period of time.

Characteristics / Clinical Presentation

Knee pain can be acute following a trauma or repetitive high impact movements or can be chronic where symptoms remain present over a period of >3-months. Most commonly knee pain occurs due to irritation or an injury to the bones, ligaments, cartilage, meniscus, muscles or tendons around the knee.
Common symptoms at the knee include:
• Pain
• Swelling
• Stiffness
• Giving way
• Locking
If you are struggling with any of the above symptoms at your knee, it is recommended you see a specialist physiotherapist for an assessment to help to determine the cause and diagnosis.

Clinical Diagnosis

Common causes of knee pain include:

• Trauma: this can be a contact or non-contact injury at the knee or as a result of a fall that can cause ligament sprains/tears, meniscus injury or fractures.

• Overuse: repeated high impact movements or prolonged kneeling can impact the tendons, muscles, bones or bursa at the knee

• Arthritis: osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can cause inflammation resulting in pain, swelling and stiffness.

• Post-operative: such as following a total/partial knee replacement, ACL reconstruction, meniscus surgery, tendon repair, knee arthroscopy

During an initial assessment, your therapist will complete a comprehensive subjective and objective assessment to determine if there is a specific cause to your knee pain and whether a scan or onward referral to a specialist is required.

Treatment

We will use objective data collection utilising VALD technology to identify any muscular imbalances and mobility deficits to inform your treatment. To optimise your recovery you will be provided with a structured individualised rehabilitation programme, receive passive therapies such as manual therapy, cryotherapy, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, bracing and taping, as well as be educated regarding your injury and any other contributing factors.
