Elbow pain refers to pain felt at the elbow joint. Elbow pain can be caused by but is not limited to:
Due to the number of structures within the elbow, symptoms can vary greatly between each injury and individual. When suffering with elbow pain you may experience:
Clinical diagnosis is often made through a careful examination of an individual’s clinical history, visible signs, range of motion, strength, special orthopaedic tests and specific painful areas of the elbow and surrounding joints. In certain cases, further diagnostic imaging such as X-ray, ultrasound or MRI may be required to fully determine the cause of the pain.
Treatment will vary between specific injuries but will often include a degree of activity modification/rest, swelling and pain management, manual therapy, addressing muscular strength imbalances, education regarding contributing factors and a gradual re-exposure to normal function and sporting activities. Your clinician may also recommend adjunct therapies such as shockwave therapy, acupuncture or dry needling. In rare instances, injections or surgery may be required.
